Behind the Counter’s 2006 Edition is a photo essay of local entrepreneurs. In this issue, readers got to see the people behind some of Greenville, SC’s finest businesses. ULTRATAN owner, Jim Mastronardi was honored to be featured.
Jim Mastronardi has an outlook that’s nothing but sunny. And no wonder. The founder of Ultratan Inc., Jim started with a single-site tanning parlor – purchased from a Greenville physician in 1990 – and has since grown his company into the country’s largest privately-owned tanning chain. With 50 locations across the Carolinas – and more on the way – Ultratan boasts top-of-the-line indoor tanning equipment and a highly trained staff.
To complement the salons, Jim launched Southeastern Tanning Products, a distributor of skin care products, tanning supplies and beds. With Ultratan in full expansion mode, Jim also founded JPM Construction to build the new salons.
The secret to Ultratan’s success is making clients look great. “Most people want to look as good as they can, ” Jim says, ” and who can deny that tanned skin looks better than pasty white?”
Pointing to the health benefits of sunshine, Jim emphasizes the importance of not getting too much of a good thing. “Our cardinal rule is to avoid OVER-exposure, not exposure.”
A Chicago native, Jim earned a mechanical engineering degree from Purdue and worked for a defense contractor prior to launching Ultratan. His pastimes include bodybuilding, through he admits that his favorite hobby is work.
